Solar Lights and Gifts Illuminate the Holidays

The solar community is beginning to say good-bye to another record year of solar energy, and thinking about how to ring in the New Year. And there are some who suggest that there is no better way to celebrate than with solar and other green gifts. SolarTown offers its ten best solar gift ideas for 2011 and includes solar lights and solar oven and even a solar backpack. (Full disclosure: SolarTown is the author of this solar news article.)

And there are others who are talking about solar gifts for their loved ones. The Miami Herald chimes in with its own list of new home-brightening gifts. The article gives some other very good gift ideas from a solar-powered rock and solar Christmas lights. The article suggests that you should check out these options as you decorate and shop for gifts this holiday season.

For techies, Rich Jaroslovsky writing on Bloomberg recommends a wireless solar keyboard. "Who says it's not easy being green?" says the Bloomberg News columnist. And for the rugged outdoorsman in your life, Tom Stienstra of the San Francisco Chronicle recommends a solar charger. He says that a "solar strip can charge your 12-volt batteries while you are out having fun."

And solar lights are going up all over the country to illuminate the holidays. This AP story about the holiday lights in Napa Valley describes the "holiday lights that bedeck the halls, rooftops and grounds of the valley's already-picturesque wineries." In the article, it sounds more like a travel promotion for Napa Valley: "A row of nearly hundred-year-old olive trees below the stone gravity flow winery (which itself dates to 1885) are covered in colored lights, and more lights shine from a canopy atop the hillside behind the iconic winery." And in keeping with the eco-friendly reputation of Napa Valley, all of the lights are solar powered, as is the winery.
