Hybrid Solar Kits

Hybrid solar kits combine the benefits of grid-tied and off-grid systems, letting you use solar power, draw from the grid, and store energy in batteries for backup during outages. These flexible systems work well for homeowners who want energy security while reducing their electric bills.

Hybrid Solar Kits: Energy Savings + Backup Power Protection

Our hybrid solar kits are designed to help you save money on electric bills, while also providing backup power to protect against outages.

Standard grid-tied solar kits store energy in the utility grid, rather than on-site. This makes them vulnerable to outages: when the grid goes down, you lose power even with solar panels on your roof.

Hybrid kits solve this problem by adding backup batteries to a grid-tied system. They use specialized hybrid inverters that automatically switch to backup power when the grid fails, so you stay powered on during outages.

Hybrid Solar Kit Components

Here's what's included in our hybrid solar kits:

Solar Panels

Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity. Most home solar kits use monocrystalline solar panels. While bulky and rigid, they fit on most rooftops, and are the most efficient and budget-friendly option available.

If you have limited space to build your array, consider high efficiency solar panels (20%+ efficiency), which can fit more solar production into a smaller form factor.

Batteries

Our hybrid kits include an appropriately sized battery bank for backup power during outages. Because the batteries serve as a layer of protection (rather than the primary power supply at home), hybrid battery banks are much smaller than those in off-grid kits.

This allows homeowners to save money on your electric bills, while still providing peace of mind for people who live in harsh climates, run critical electrical equipment, or are connected to an unreliable power grid.

Need help sizing your battery bank? Our design team has extensive experience with hybrid systems and can help you navigate the unique challenges of these installations.

Inverters

Commonly described as the "brain" of the solar power system, inverters convert DC (direct current) energy from panels into AC (alternating current) energy that powers your home appliances.

There are two main types: microinverters, which attach a small inverter to each panel, and string inverters, a centralized inverter which controls multiple panels. String inverters are more cost effective, while microinverters make systems more reliable and easy to expand.

Mounting Hardware

Our solar kits include the solar panel mounting hardware needed to secure panels to your roof or ground mount foundation.

Please note that ground mounts will require a separate sub-structure to be built as a foundation for the solar array, and the components needed to build this foundation are not included in our kits. You will need to source the materials for pipes, concrete footings, etc. from a local hardware store. Please consult with a member of our design team if you're planning a ground mount project.

Customize Your Hybrid Solar Kit

We sell hybrid kits with batteries included, as well as hybrid-ready kits without batteries to go solar now and plan for battery backup down the road.

Our goal is to make DIY solar accessible for as many people as possible. If you'd like to put together a custom kit that covers your exact needs, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We are happy to spec out a system and put together a parts list based on your goals.
